About Us

Bokoshe began as a trading post some time after the Civil War. The name Bokoshe is derived from the Choctaw language, meaning little creek. We are the quintessential small town USA. Not much has changed through the years. Local businesses have come and gone. We don’t have a local TV station, radio station or newspaper. We get our news from Tulsa, Oklahoma City or the Arkansas River Valley. Most news is spread by word of mouth.

The news about the additional AES plant spread fairly quickly. We attended a meeting by The Center for Energy Matter. The talk was about building the new plant, the emissions put out by coal-fired plants and the damage they cause. Now the coal coalitions have been about stopping new coal plants from being built. We care about the plants and the emissions but our big concern was the fly ash. The stuff nobody talks about. Those were the question we had that night. Some of us came home with more questions than answers and so did the people from CEM and other organization which were there.

After great deal of research on fly ash and more meetings the Bokoshe Environmental Cause Group was formed. Because fly ash is in the air we breathe and we don’t like or want it, we have decided to do something about it. Where our fight will end no one knows. We have formed a group and together we will take it to conclusion.

Radiation levels rising.

Slow death is in the air.

Every thing’s mutating but nobody seems to care.

Now our children have to live with the changes that we make.

The whole earth has suffered from the chances that we take.

We say that’s the price of progress and we have no other choice.

Can we make an honest effort? Can see beyond our greed?
