Carlan Tappcarlan
Carlan is a photographer and educator dedicated to documenting the social and environmental issues that define our times, specifically social justice, environmental and health themes. He uses his camera to look at the world striving to tell stories of the twenty-first century. A sensitive eye and an intimate relationship to his subjects are the signatures of his work, which has been published, collected and recognized around the world. In 2005 he established a Federal (501c3) non-profit project Question of Power. The project tells human stories of individuals, families and communities—stories of unheard voices affected by the extraction, production, consumption and waste materials of coal in the creation of electricity for America.

In August 2010, Carlan contacted B.E. Cause asking permission to visit Bokoshe and help us tell our story, in our own words with a photo documentary. A look at his website, shows commitment to his project and his unique ability to masterfully combine peoples stories with his amazing photography. We were excited about his interest and invited him to visit. We spent an extraordinary week with him documenting our story. He is sincere, passionate, and empathetic towards our cause. We loved having him here and issued an open invitation to come back any time. He is back this week to talk with the kids in town and let them share their feelings.

Radiation levels rising.

Slow death is in the air.

Every thing’s mutating but nobody seems to care.

Now our children have to live with the changes that we make.

The whole earth has suffered from the chances that we take.

We say that’s the price of progress and we have no other choice.

Can we make an honest effort? Can see beyond our greed?
