What about the ODEQ?
On April 15, 2009, the members of B.E. Cause attended a meeting of the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality - Air Quality meeting in Tulsa. We had a massive show of solidarity from our Bokoshe group. The effectiveness of our prepared statements, brochure and photographic evidences held the commission's attention and each made specific points pertaining to different aspects of the fly ash dumpsite situation.
In addition, a number of citizens from Bartlesville and Pawhuska supported B.E. Cause and spoke out against the no mercury rule and coal plants in general, including a seven year old girl.
AES spokeman Lundy Kiger followed the little girl and only offered that AES had no responsibility to the fly ash situation in Bokoshe stating that it is contracted to Making Money Having Fun. He did not address or offer to dispute any of the claims brought forth by the Bokoshe Cause group. (If AES did not produce fly ash there would not be an issue.)
After the meeting adjourned, many of the commissioners personally praised the group saying this was the largest contingency of citizens to ever participate in an air quality meeting and that the residents statements and comments were well thought out, thorough and compelling.
Since the meeting the group has heard from the ODEQ. In response to our prepared statements and photographic evidence they told us: “In order for us to determine whether our fugitive dust rules would apply we need to either see the material leaving the property line or verify that fugitive dust is impacting property beyond the property line from which it was generated. Fly ash is so fine that the likelihood of us actually seeing it leave the property is almost zero.”
After seeing the video and photographs, do they think the wind stops blowing at Making Money Having Fun’s property line and all the fugitive dust falls immediately to the ground ensuring it stays inside the property line? You have to wonder...
